What to look for in a power wheelchair

Start with where the chair has to go. The average turning radius of a power wheelchair is 20 to 30 inches, which allows smooth movement indoors. For travel, the Jazzy Carbon folds quickly, the Golden Cricket LT side-folds to about 12 inches, and the Pride Go Chair disassembles. The Jazzy Air 2 has a seat that rises while you drive, up to eye level.

For long hours in the chair or complex seating needs, an ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) can assess you and fit the chair. That assessment and fitting is what an ATP-certified provider offers and a big box store does not.

Rent or buy

Power wheelchairs are on our rental list, with a 7-day minimum, by the week or the month. That suits a short recovery or a visitor. A long-term chair is usually a purchase, fitted to the person who will use it.

Medicare and insurance

Medicare Part B may cover 80% of the approved cost of a power wheelchair when a physician deems it medically necessary for use at home. An insurance-funded purchase needs a physician's prescription, documentation of medical necessity and a summary of a face-to-face examination. Short-term rentals are private pay. We handle the paperwork and billing for Medicare and insurance claims.
