What to look for in a wheelchair

A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels the rider can push. A transport chair has small wheels and is pushed by someone else; it is lighter and folds smaller. Aluminum frames are lighter to lift, and steel frames are built for sturdy daily use. Seat width matters for comfort and for getting through doorways.

On a transport chair, anti-tip wheels should sit 1 to 2 inches above the ground on a level surface. If you plan to fly, ask about our lightweight, foldable chairs designed for easy storage and travel.

Rent or buy

Rent for a recovery or a short visit: standard chairs come in 14", 18", 20" and 22" seat widths, with a 7-day minimum, by the week or the month. Buy when the chair will be used long term, or when it needs a custom fitting from our ATP-certified technician.

Medicare and insurance

Medicare Part B may cover a wheelchair when your doctor orders it as medically necessary for use in your home. Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount after the Part B deductible and rents the chair month to month; after 13 months of continuous rental, it becomes yours. Short-term rentals are private pay, and we can provide a chair while Medicare authorization is in progress. We accept Medicare, most secondary and supplemental plans, and many private insurers.
