What to look for in a home hospital bed

A full electric bed adjusts the head, the foot and the overall height. A hi-low bed also lowers closer to the floor for easier transfers and fall prevention. A standard home bed has a safe working load of about 350 to 450 lbs; bariatric beds come in 42, 48 and 54 inch widths for patients over 450 lbs.

The mattress must be 80 inches long and made to flex with the frame, and pressure-reducing or alternating pressure mattresses are recommended for pressure relief. Half-length rails are generally preferred because they make getting in and out easier while still protecting the upper body from falls. If the bedroom is small, we can recommend a compact model.
